1. ParkingThere are car-parking spaces at the front and rear of the Clubhouse. Golf clubs can be taken into, and out of, the Clubhouse through the rear Locker-Room doors only. Please do not change clothes, or shoes, in the car-park areas. On busy days cars can be parked in the street, but parking on any pavement areas may result in a “ Parking Ticket” from the ever- vigilant Traffic Wardens.
2. Dress-Code
Like many Clubs we have a dress-code that includes standards for both the Clubhouse and the Course.
The Clubhouse - Smart casual is the standard. This includes collared shirts; trousers; shoes, and socks. Shorts can be worn , with either long socks, or with short white socks. Shorts however must be of the tailored style. This does not include styles used for other sports; beachwear; or multi-pocketed casual-wear. Shoes does not include trainers, sandals, flip-flops etc. Golf shoes, including those with soft spikes, are not permitted in the main public rooms. Smart casual dress is permitted in the Dining-Room except for formal Club functions and Sundays lunches when jackets and ties are required.
The Course - Smart golf wear is the standard. Trainers, jeans, and round-necked shirts are not allowed. Shirts must be tucked into trousers but trousers must not be tucked into socks. As a sign of respect to others please do not go into the main Cluhouse areas, after playing, in clothes that are dirty or wet .
3. Changing
There are 2 changing areas. The main area in the Clubhouse has toilets and showers, plus lockers but these are for members only. The second area also for members only, is in the Caddymaster's Hut. This area provides a toilet, a shower and lockers.
There is a waiting-list for lockers, but they do become available. If you are interested in a locker then see either the Secretary, or the Caddymaster, for more information.
4. General Course Use
As members, or guests, we hope that you will enjoy your time with us, and especially on the course. Posted on the notice-board in the Clubhouse foyer is a list of all the month's activities. This includes the dates for Club matches, competitions, Societies, and any other event that is going to occupy the course. There are other times during the week when the tees are busy e.g. Tuesday and Thursday mornings when the Seniors and the Ladies have “ traditional” early starts. If you are bringing a guest, or just coming down for a game, it is as well to check either the Club Diary, or the noticeboard, to avoid disappointment. If the 1st tee is booked , or just busy, it is perfectly reasonable to start at the10th, but you may only do so if there are no golfers on the main 9th fairway, and no golfers in the Roundhouse who are still meaning to play on.
The Roundhouse is open for the benefit of all golfers. It provides hot and cold drinks and food at the half-way point of a round. We encourage all golfers to stop and use this facility. When a group in front of you uses the Roundhouse you cannot go through them without their permission. The Roundhouse is only for the use of golfers on the course. Snacks and drinks can be ordered from the bar in the Clubhouse at other times.
5.Weekend Play
We hope that you will find our Club a friendly place to play golf. We encourage members to mix, and hope that by not 'fixing-up' on Saturday and Sunday mornings in particular you will quickly get involved in Club life. At weekends the'earlybirds' are in the Clubhouse by 07.45 ; have a coffee; find a group of 3 who are “looking for one” ,and play from either the 1st or 10th tees. The afternoon players are down about 11.30 and have a similar way of getting a game, with perhaps a beer instead of a coffee!
The noticeboard between the carpark and the 1st tee gives information that is needed for that day e.g. which tees are in use; local rules and restrictions; tee bookings etc.
6.Competitions
For Knock-out Competitions a notice is put up in the locker-room inviting members to sign-up for that event. After the closing-date for entries a draw is made and published on the same noticeboard. Please check the draw for your name, your opponents, and the deadline date for completing each round. It is rare for this deadline date to be extended so if you do not play in time you may well be disqualified. The 'top' players in the draw should make the first contact, but all players should actively try to get dates fixed. Check the date of the Final- you never know! If you cannot make that date then you should not enter.
For One-Day Competitions, including the Monthly Medals, a notice is put on the board in the locker-room, at 1.00, two weeks before the event. These lists have start-times for both the 1st and the10th tees. For singles competitions there are 3 players per slot. The times range from 08.00 to about 09.30. You can play in the afternoon, without having to sign up, but check with the Professional for further details. If you only want to play in the morning but missed a slot we have 3 'red-box' times that allow you to sign up on the morning at the Pro's Shop. ' Early-Birds' are usually around at about 07.30 for these 9 places, but it is first -come- first- served, with no friends able to sign in for you.
Competition Fees are paid at the Pro' Shop. For Knockout Competitions this must be paid before you play your first round, on pain of disqualification. For one-day competitions the entrance fee is again paid at the Pro's Shop, with the optional addition of a small fee for a ball-sweep. Other than for the Monthly Medals, for which the results are posted on the noticeboard in the locker-room, each competition is ended by a formal presentation. This takes place in the 'Honours' Bar at 6.30 on the evening of the event, or of the Final, depending on the event. It is a very pleasant evening that usually lasts about 45 minutes but seems to have a lot packed into a short space of time. Everybody who plays in that competition is welcome, and encouraged , to attend the celebration of the winners and runners-up. Your entry fee entitles you to free drinks during the presentation!! Apart from the Club silverware, which the winners keep for the year, Past-Captains sponsor each competition so that the winners and runners-up will receive prizes that they can keep. Speeches of thanks are usually an amusing part of the evening. A letter of thanks to the sponsor is appreciated.
If you cannot play in the Saturday Monthly Medals there are Mid-Week Medals which are held on a Wednesday each month. The dates for these are in the Club Diary, and the Pro' Shop will have more details. These are very useful events for Handicap purposes.
7. ClubMatches
Each Spring members are invited to sign up for Inter-Club matches. A notice goes up on the board giving details of the opposition and the dates. You can sign up for as many matches as you like, and hopefully everyone will get a match somewhere. If selected a Club green shirt needs to be bought from the Pro' Shop. Our matches are played on a home and away basis, quite often for a trophy. If you play in one 'leg' you usually get invited to play in the return. The matches also include a 'sit-down' meal afterwards, which is covered by the match-fee.
8. The Roll-Up
This is an excellent way of meeting other members. It takes place Tuesdays throughout the summer, usually from about 4.00 to 5.30. It is open to all members and played over 9 holes, with only 1 shot per hole for handicap. The entry fee includes your first drink, and there are hot snacks on sale in the Bar area, as well as a presentation of prizes. Play is usually in4's, with a draw for partners on the 1st tee. Some small wager , usually the 'card' , adds a little spice to the proceedings.
9. Club Days
The Club organises some major golfing days during the year. They are well-publicised and entry lists are either in the locker-rooms or in the Clubhouse foyer. There is a Members Invitation event in August, so that you can bring your guests along to enjoy the Club. There is a Pro-Am event in May, and it is always good fun to see how the game is supposed to be played. The Seniors have an Open which is open to not only our own members but to those from other Clubs as well. The major fund-raising event of the year is “ Charity Day” which is golf, food, and a Charity Auction. The generosity of our members on Charity Day is greatly appreciated by the local community. You can enter as an individual, or you can enter your own team.
If you need any further information about the Club, and what is going on , please contact either our Administration Manager, Mrs Angela Besant and her assistant, Miss Ann Beard in the office or our Golf Professional, Robert Hunter and his assistant Ben in the Professional's Shop. This is your Club so please use it as fully as you can. If you are a new member come along and join in; walk round with a Final; enter an event; come to a presentation-- who knows, you might enjoy it.
